I am selling my 1968 Triumph Vitesse convertible. It is a 2 litre straight six engine with an original convertible body/chassis.

I have had this car since early 2009 and it has been a great vehicle. However, a recent change of job means I do not get the time to use it as much any more and so I have decided to sell it.

When I use the car, which is at least a couple of times a month, it has been perfectly reliable – starts every time and never breaks down. Last summer, I took the car out on a week-long trip across the UK, travelling from Kent to Blackpool and back. Over the 800-odd miles, the car performed fantastically well, starting first time every time and never missing a beat. The look on drivers’ faces as I roared passed them in the outside lane of the M6 was priceless! I cannot stress just how reliable this car is and how quick it goes.

As you can see from the photos, it is in good overall condition. It looks stunning and runs very well. Here’s a few notes to help you learn more about the car....

Overall, the car is in very good condition. It is not showroom concourse condition, but it’s a lot better than many I see about. It has the odd job here and there needing attention (e.g. stiff driver’s window, indicator bulb on the dashboard does not flash with the side indicators, there’s a bit of a rattle from the handbrake sometimes, etc.). These are all very small niggles (which comes with owning a 40-plus year old car), and are nothing major. Overall though, the car is great.

MOT – the car sailed through its last three MOTs. Next MOT is due 19 May 2013.

ORIGINAL CONVERTIBLE – the car has a ‘CV’ chassis plate, which means it is an original convertible and left the factory as such.

OVERDRIVE – on the steering wheel. Works perfectly.

HISTORY – I don’t know the full history of the car, but I believe it was restored quite recently, most likely in the last 10 years (my guess). I say this because the paintwork and most of the interior is relatively new. The paintwork is shining red and the lining, carpet and seats look quite new. Whoever did this left some original pieces, such as the dashboard, steering wheel and sun visors.

PAINTWORK – lovely gleaming signal red. It looks really amazing when it’s washed and polished up. There is one crack on the front of the bonnet, just behind the ‘H’ in the chrome TRIUMPH letters, about the size of a 10p piece.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM – perfect!!! Better than perfect!!! When I first got the car, I replaced the dynamo with a brand new alternator (complete with conversion kit). I also replaced the plugs, leads, distributor cap, contacts, condenser and battery with all new parts. In fact, I replaced the battery with a huge HB075 model with 520 amps of cranking power and it has never let me down since.

INTERIOR – looks great. Carpets and door trim are black with red piping. There are a couple of small holes in the driver’s seat, one where a spring has poked through, but apart from that it’s great.

UNDERNEATH – I’m not an expert in this area, but it all looks good to me. When I first bought the car, I had it fully checked over by my local MG specialist, and he told me the underframe/chassis is perfect.

ENGINE – perfect. Comes complete with a pair of K&N air filters.  Has its original engine.

STORAGE - has been kept under cover every single day that I have owned it.

USEAGE – I have used this car on a regular basis (i.e. most weeks), which keeps it in good working order.

RELIABILITY – I think I have covered this a few times already. The car is ultra-reliable.

TSSC – I am a member of the Triumph Sports Six Club. They are a great bunch of people, in terms of help, support, advice and a chat over a beer. Well worth joining.

OVERDRIVE – on the steering wheel. Works perfectly.

INSURANCE – for your information, it cost me £68 this year.

ROAD TAX – no cost. Free. Nil. Zero.

HOOD – Not new, but it works. I have taken a close-up photo of one of the rear corners, where the seam has come apart. Worth replacing this and the tonneau cover some time, but not an immediate one. A few of the press studs on the tonneau cover no longer click in, I suggest replacing this.

REAR SEAT BELTS – I had these fitted to my last Triumph Vitesse at a cost of about £500 (Quikfit in Stanmore, Middlesex – check out their website for details). When I sold that one, I had them removed and fitted to this car. The Vitesse was originally built without rear seatbelts and you will find that not many have had them installed.

FRONT SEAT BELTS – recently installed  brand new period style static lap and diagnols, with high shine chrome buckles. These look amazing. Bought form Quickfit (again, see details above) for about £140, though cost a lot more than that to fit!

My much loved V8 TR7 is for sale to a good home.Restoration on this car began in 2007 and took 18 months to complete. It was rebodied using a Californian imported rust free body which had been a track car in the states so has a racing heritage but unfortunately no provenance is available to prove it. The V8 conversion was done using an S&S preparations  front cross member. The full specs of the car are below and I stopped counting when I’d spent over £12,000. A full photographic record is available.Suspension.Full urethane bush kit with KYB gas assist shocks and uprated and lowered springs.BrakesUprated vented front disc kit with TR8 rear cylinders and uprated master cylinder with servo.Body shellA Californian body was used and apart from two small patches the size of a match box the entire body should be considered virtually rust free. Most cars now have shiney paint over rust and filler around the arches but this car only has filler to take out the dents. Its rust free.Drive train (the good bit)Standard but completely rebuilt LT77 gearbox.  3.08 diff installed in the axle to give the correct final drive gear ratio.The motor is a 3.9L rover V8 and has been extensively modified for performance and includes, piper camshaft, ported and flowed heads, all new piston rings and reground crank 5,000 miles ago. A Mallory Unilite distributor with an RPI amp. Webber 500 four barrel Carb with edelbrock inlet manifold and air filter. Magnecor leads. This motor was tuned on a DYNO and gave out 275 BHP which is colossal for such a light car. Acceleration is blisteringly quick.TrimThe whole car was retrimmed using a Rimmer brothers half leather trim set in black with black carpets. A mohair hood was fitted and looks superb but there are two small splits in the rear windows that require repair. Also has a mohair hood cover which looks lovely when fitted. The dashboard switches etc were from a barn find car and are in lovely condition.WheelsIt has just been fitted with a set of 17” Team Dynamics PRO RACE1.2 wheels with brand new tyres. Other infoThe battery has been moved to the boot which is a common modification and the car has just has a full 2 pack respray which has an amazing shine and the black finish shows how good the bodyshell really is. It has a stainless exhaust system with the classic V8 twin tail pipes. Sounds beautiful. If you want them there are enough spares to fill a transit van.The overall standard of this car is very high and has won many prizes at local shows but is not a concours car, and has been a daily driver and covered over 24,000 since its restoration. I am confident it is one of the best daily drivers around and would rank as one of the best at any classic car show. This car has a massive street presence which doesn’t come over in the pictures and draws a crowd wherever it goes.
